3Pod Orbit 4-Section Aluminum Photo/Video Monopod with Fluid Base and Tilt Head with Quick Release (Review)
3Pod Monopod (3PVM4A)
3Pod T1 Tilt Head with Quick Release (3PSHT1)
3Pod Monopod with Tilt Head Bundle
Adorama
$59.95 Monopod only
$32.00 Tilt Head with Quick Release
$79.95 with Tilt Head with Quick Release Bundle ($12.00 savings)
If you’ve searched high low for a monopod that you can use in just about any situation, stop looking, this is it. The 3PVM4A Monopod by 3Pod, sold by Adorama is one fine piece of photographic machinery. And for under, a lot under, $100, it’s the best I’ve seen. At a whopping 65.5 inches high (max), it’s comfortable for taller photographers to use, without having to crouch or bend down. I should know; I’m one of those taller photographers. This one also quickly adjusts from two feet high (23.5 inches, to be exact) to any height in between. The fluid base allows you to make smooth panning movements when the feet are down. Without the feet in the down and locked position, you have a standard monopod featuring three fast open/close flip locks for quick and easy height adjustments.
Joseph Butler and I review the 3Pod Monopod with Tilt Head.
The best feature of all. Wait for it. Look at the picture and see if you can figure it out. That’s right! It can stand on its own. At the very bottom of the monopod, you can fold down three locking legs to steady the monopod while you walk away to get yourself on camera, have an interview, or just to check focus. Sure, you can use it like a standard monopod, but those three little legs make this the bringer of the best of both worlds. Frankly, since receiving this, I haven’t used a traditional tripod again. Which in part is some of my excuse for the delay in posting this review.
I suggest purchasing the bundle. You save $12.00 by buying the Tilt Head with Quick Release, so why not make a frugal choice? For $79.95, you get the Monopod, the 3PSHT1, bag, and adjusting wrench. Even if you decide to buy another monopod head, this one will serve you well.
If you’re worried about camera weight on the monopod, let me put your fears to rest. It has held a Canon 60D with 18-135 zoom lens and a shotgun microphone without any issues.
What I really love about this setup is that it’s built for the run-n-gun photo/videographer who also might need to jump in front of the camera to narrate or to introduce a guest. You can walk away with confidence that you’re not going to end up with a smashed camera in the process. For photographers and videographers on the move, the monopod has a large padded handle that’s easy on your hands, plus it’s non-slip feature keeps your equipment safe while you’re running for the shot. The three quick-release height adjustments allow you to keep moving while you adjust the height of the monopod too. And if you don’t want to run with the monopod feet in the down position, they have “step-on” releases so that you can pick up and run without hesitation.
The Tilt Head with Quick Release is a ‘must have’ item because you can remove your camera from the monopod without disturbing the monopod’s position with just a snap of the silver lever you see at the right of the quick release mount. You can also come back and place your camera on the monopod without twisting, turning, or fussing with a ‘pod screw mount. Just place your camera back onto the monopod and turn the lever to secure the quick release mount and start your scene. It is literally a one-two movement and you’re back in business. Plus the Tilt Head stays gravity-centered for vertical shots.
I love the 3Pod monopod. It is the perfect ‘pod for me. It’s not bulky and cumbersome like a tripod, nor is it awkward and always in hand like a traditional monopod. It’s also not a pain to setup and adjust like most tripods are. To me, it’s the best of both worlds. It is the monopod that I wish I’d invented, but for $80, who needs the headache of prototyping, crowdfunding, begging for supporters, and wasting a bunch of energy when 3Pod has created the perfect ‘pod.

Why it’s Frugal: If it isn’t already obvious, the 3Pod monopod-tilt head with quick release is extremely frugal. First, you can buy the pair and save $12.00 (frugal). Second, you don’t have to carry a tripod and a monopod everywhere you go and fumble around with them–you have a monopod that can stand alone (frugal). And third, you don’t have to have another person with you to handle the camera while you go stand in front for an introduction, an interview, or a focus (frugal). It’s the best $80 you’ll ever spend on photography equipment.
As you can see in the video, Joseph and I both love the monopod. We fight over it and it’s hard to pry it from our grubby hands once one of us has it in possession. Seriously, it’s that good. For serious photographers and videographers at any level, this monopod beats any that I’ve ever used or seen. And yes, I’ve used the one that you’ve heard of (Sounds like a character from Lord of the Rings) and this one beats it many times over. The build quality is excellent. The quick release latches are easy to use and quick to adjust. No slips, no tips, and no lost cameras.
Rating: 9.5/10
Recommendation: Buy the bundle, save a small bundle, and enjoy your new favorite and essential accessory.

Flashpoint 300 LED on Camera Light (Review)
Flashpoint 300 LED
Adorama
$79.95
The Flashpoint 300 (300) LED is the first on-camera LED light that I’ve tried and I have to say up front that I love it. The 300 is a lightweight, versatile, fully adjustable light source that delivers as much or as little light as you want for a very good price. 300 individual LEDs provide you with strong, even light that you can’t reproduce with a standard flash unit.
Flashpoint 300 LED: On-Camera Light with Audio
The large 300 diode LED gives action videographers and still photographers super bright, high-quality output. With auto light levels, stereo microphones and a signal flash mode, the 300 LED can sense lighting requirements and delivers automatic balance exposure as it passes from one environment to another, making it ideal for run-and-gun shooters looking for the most light on demand. The on-board stereo electret condenser microphones are also invaluable for traveling shooters, minimizing the need to cage-rig a camera for attaching an external microphone. The sensitive mics are distanced from camera sounds on either top corner of the light, delivering clean audio directly to the camera. All fitting comfortably atop a camera’s hot shoe or off-camera via the convenient stand thread, the 300 LED is a comprehensive package in a superior, sleek design.
I like that the unit delivers consistent light at all levels. There’s no flicker or any odd color shifting at full power or at any power setting.
- Advanced 300 LED lamp count in a sleek but strong unit.
- Delivers amazing flicker free Daylight 7140 lux at 50cm.
- Generous beautiful wrap around 80 degree angle emission.
- Automatic light level mode responds to conditions automatically or total manual control with fine settings.
- Dimmer dial from 0-100% with shift free color.
- Renders at least 85% of total spectral value.
- Digital display for battery level and light output .
- Uses standard Sony NP 7.4v Lithium battery plus DC power adapters.
- Built-in Stereo Microphones delivers clean audio to camera.
- Constructed of super tough black ABS.
- Keeps subjects and gear cool and comfortable when used close up.
- Special emergency signal capabilities.
Why it’s Frugal: The Flashpoint 300 LED is frugal because it’s the only light you need for a variety of situations including run-n-gun, still photography, video, and fill lighting. When you only need one light that can fill almost every need, then it’s frugal.
I took the 300 with me to SpiceWorld 2015 in Austin last week and I had a professional photographer ask me all about it. I showed him all the same features that I explained in the video. I’ll bet that he’s already placed an order for one.
If you can only carry one light with you, this should be the one. In its bag, with two extra batteries (sold separately), that I highly recommend that you purchase, the space cost is approximately 9″x7″x1.5″. That small space contains the 300 LED, the audio cable, two batteries, and your filters.
The only reason that the 300 didn’t get the coveted 10/10 is that it drains batteries (sold separately for $22.70) pretty fast. And it drains them even when the unit is off, but the the batteries are connected. So, remove your battery from the unit if it’s going to be off for more than 30 minutes. Buy more than one battery. You get two plus a charger from the link above at Amazon.
Rating: 9.5/10
Recommendation: If you are a photographer or videographer, this light must be in your bag. And the batteries too.
Glow Adds QuadraPop and ParaPop 38″ Portable Softboxes to Light Modifier Line for More Flawless Hard Light Diffusion
New York, NY – July 28, 2015 – Glow, the award-winning brand of high quality lighting modifiers for professional photography and video production, has just announced two new additions to its softbox collection – the Glow QuadraPop 24”x34” and the Glow ParaPop 38” Portable Softboxes. The perfect solutions for speedlights, studio lights and large portable strobes, Glow’s latest models feature excellent softbox quality, marrying a sleek look with superior, innovative design for the “pop” of innovation needed in every imaging scenario.
Both models are available with speedrings for five popular types of speedlights, monolights and studio strobe heads. The interchangeable speedrings align either light modifier with virtually every brand, allowing creative imagemakers the flexibility and value of using their modifier of choice with any type of lighting and/or brand in their gear kit, simply by changing out the speedring. Because of their durable, easy-to-use and lightweight frames, both the Glow QuadraPop and ParaPop are perfect for mobile portraits, and travel photography and videography in addition to studio work. They are ideal for imaging enthusiasts of all levels, from novice to professional.
Made primarily in Korea, the Glow line is getting noticed by customers from all over for its high quality and variety of offerings. Photographer Wally Kilburg, of The Studio at 46 West, based just outside of Chicago, commented, “Glow products are engineered to compliment other vendors’ products, as in my use of Glow softbox grids. Softbox grids often cost more than the modifier they are used on, so it’s pure joy to find the Glow grids work on the standard sizes listed – and at a way low price! Well-made, priced right, and they work as good as you can find. Pretty much the same can be said of any Glow products I have used.”
“We love the Glow products, especially in studio and on location, for their affordable pricing, great build, quality and beautiful lighting effects,” adds Daniel Marcion of Belle Portwe Photography, a premier fashion, commercial and wedding photography studio located on the island of Saint Lucia. “I can recommend The Glow Line to anyone interested in great quality light modifiers. They have a variety of products that meet our needs and we plan to continue using them in our studio.”
The QuadraPop 24”x34” and ParaPop 38” Portable Softboxes are now available online at Adorama.com and at the Adorama superstore, located at 42 West 18th Street in New York City.
About Glow QuadraPop 24”x34” Portable Softbox
The lightweight, rectangular QuadraPop 24”x34” opens and closes with speed and ease, providing ultimate portability with one snap. It was designed by engineers using UV-A and UV-R diffuser materials, to reduce UV light by up to 98% and make it exceptionally heat and water resistant. With no falloff from edge to edge, it combines the strength of a portrait key light with all of the benefits of a soft wrap, blending perfectly with any additional fill. Its rectangular shape lights evenly and makes it a popular choice for fashion, portrait, child and beauty photography.
The Glow QuadraPop is now available from Adorama for 199.95 USD.
About Glow ParaPop 38” Portable Softbox
Like the QuadraPop, the ParaPop 38” snaps into action with jointed positioning rods that open, close and lock with one click. The ParaPop’s unique 12-sided shape and parabolic profile provides a huge 105-degree light spread. It creates sun-like shadows that are slight and beautifully graduated, giving dimension where it is needed the most. The size and shape of a softbox determines how soft and seamless shadows look on a subject, and the ParaPop 38” is being quickly recognized for creating a gentler, more pleasing final shot.
